The social phenomenon due to aging is an academic subject which should be studied across the overall scope of life science including social science and medicine beyond the research area of a specific academic field. The Institute for Studies in Aging has reorganized the Research Center for Studies in Aging into a central institute for gerontology research preparing the aging society by utilizing domestic and international networks to advance into an international gerontology research information center.

Research Center for Climate Change and Energy
Nature is loudly warning people through abnormal climate phenomena about scientific evidence of global warming, resulting abnormal climate phenomena, and upcoming disasters as time passes and voices urging the human society for response are increasing. The Research Center for Climate Change and Energy conducts research activities to propose social, economic, and technological alternatives for effectively responding to climate change caused by global warming. Its projects include calculation and verification of greenhouse gas emissions, formulation of climate change response strategies, development of greenhouse gas reduction and implementation plans, creation of carbon emission trading models and methodologies, climate change prediction and adaptation, as well as master’s and doctoral education and professional training programs.

Institute of Japanese Studies
The Institute of Japanese Studies performs general research on Japan including Japanese ideology, history, politics, economy, society, art, etc. The institute is especially dedicated to research projects utilizing surveys and comparative studies on Korea Japan relationships to contribute to the development of Korea Japan relationships and also promote the understanding of peace and prosperity throughout Northeast Asia. The institute is also actively publishing projects including the General Japanese Studies, Representative Modern Japanese Literature, General Japanese Materials, and Hallym Japanese Studies. The institute is also the only library that specializes in Japanese studies in Korea possessing approximately 60,000 books, and also possesses an online library system that enables online searching.

Ilsong Institute of Life Sciences
Ilsong Institute of Life Sciences is a specialized life science research institute with 7 full-time professors and approximately 50 researchers. The Department of Basic Life Science Research, Research Support Office, Special Research Office, and National Designated Research Center are affiliated to this institute and currently 2 nationally designated centers are operating. Ilsong Institute of Life Sciences was designated as a “Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Diagnostic Center” by the Korea National Institute of Health in May 2001. Since then, it has effectively served as a diagnostic center, conducting both diagnostic and fundamental research on domestic prion diseases. In July 2005, the institute was further designated as a “BL-III Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Autopsy Center” by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency to enhance the accurate diagnosis of CJD patients in Korea through autopsies. The Department of Basic Life Science Research consists of the Cell Aging and Degenerative Neurological Change Laboratory, Molecular Oncology Laboratory, Cell Biology Laboratory, Parkinson's Disease and Neurogenetics Laboratory, Molecular Virology Laboratory, Molecular Neurogenetics Laboratory, Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy Laboratory, and Neurodegenerative Disease Laboratory. The Research Support Office possesses cutting-edge and expensive equipment where professional researchers with Ph.D. and Master's degrees provide support for research.

Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology
The goal of the Institute of Bioscience & Biotechnology is the development of science through research activities in natural science, specifically in biotechnology in addition to biomedical engineering research through bioscience related researchers and research equipment within the university. The institute has conducted research on human diseases in the medical biotechnology field based on this ability and passion, and will perform creative research focusing on the development of biotechnology treatment methods targeting human diseases with stable financial support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and National Research Foundation of Korea.

The Health & Life Care Institute has the research vision of designing and integrating communication technology as the alternative to enhance community health and reduce regional health gaps. The institute pursues the research goal of designing and establishing models for the new media of health promotion through execution and model development of remote treatment, mobile health research to reduce regional health information gaps, health promotion virtual reality platform and interaction design research, and health promotion content strategy research. Moreover, it is a large international research center that builds a regional health ICT system to evaluate design, effectiveness, and policies contributing to the enhancement of community health.

The Korean Institute of Nutrition is a research institute that performs interdisciplinary joint research throughout the overall scope of life science including food, nutrition, health, and aging. The Korean Institute of Nutrition actively performs joint research receiving various external research projects including National Research Foundation projects with the excellent life science related research personnel at Hallym University.

Institute for Liver and Digestive Diseases
The Institute for Liver and Digestive Diseases performs research on the correlation between the intestinal microbiome and liver diseases and patient-derived live biotherapeutic products (LBPs). The goal is to develop diagnostic and treatment technologies through final clinical research by exploring digestive disease specific intestinal microorganisms and apply them to animal experiments for mechanism investigation.
